Disaster Preparedness

Safety is the top priority. In any emergency, every person at Boys State is responsible for sounding the alarm and ensuring each other’s safety. Emergencies may include imminent severe weather, natural disasters or man-made threats.

DO NOT HESITATE. ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.

Apply this general three-step plan as the specific situation requires.

1. SOUND THE ALARM
     A. Activate the nearest emergency alarm (fire alarm).
     B. Use all available means (voice, telephone, text message) to alert every affected person.

2. MOVE TO SAFETY
     A. Every staff member is responsible for moving every delegate to a safe location.
     B. For severe weather and outdoor emergencies, move, assemble and account for every delegate in the most interior room on the lowest level of the nearest building.
     B. For fires and indoor emergencies, move, assemble and account for every delegate a safe distance from the main entrance of the nearest building.

3. CALL FOR HELP
     A. Call 911 if appropriate or contact the proper authority (campus police, senior staff).
     B. Notify the Director and the Security Chief  by contacting headquarters as soon as possible.
